Macnas At School

An Treun - The Summoning of the Lost

Macnas invites schools to be a part of our new show, An Treun - The Summoning of the Lost!

This year, Macnas has commissioned a new story for children called Holding Up The Sky – The Return of the Lost, written by Louise Lowe and illustrated by Lisa Sweeney. The story is part of this year’s Macnas parade, directed by Louise Lowe with lead designer Owen Boss of ANU Productions.

This year’s parade celebrates environmental awareness through the story of the Corncrake, one of Ireland’s most endangered birds. A century ago, its distinctive call could be heard across the country - until the fields fell silent. Through this year’s parade, young people and schools can come together to explore themes of climate change, biodiversity, and cultural memory, reimagining what has been lost and daring to bring it back.

The new story follows Callie the Corncrake, a lonely bird whose call once filled Ireland’s meadows before machines and mowing silenced her world. With the help of a girl named JoJo, children across the city use homemade guiros to mimic her call during a parade. Their collective sound magically brings the corncrakes - and hope for nature’s return - back to the sky.

You can help Callie hold up the sky!

Once you have read the story, we would love for you to create your own güiro, and bring it to the parade, calling Callie’s family and friends to return to Ireland. A güiro is a percussion instrument, or an instrument that produces sound when it’s struck. They are an easy instrument to make at home and school from recycled materials!
